FrankfurtRheinMain includes all key industries and basis infrastructures. The metropolitan region has the highest density apart from Amsterdam of basis infrastructures (inter alia DE-CIX, DENIC, Internet data processing centers) in Europe and provides a comparatively leading, functional variety in Europe, as usually only found in capital cities. By connecting more than 500 national and international telecommunication companies and internet services providers, the metropolis has the highest level of connectivity in Germany. The connection of central core areas of digital infrastructure with numerous users in the metropolitan region creates sustainably innovative impulses for the development of the competitiveness.
The majority of the companies settled here still relay on their own infrastructures. The tendency to invest in one’s own digital devices will be greater the more specific they are to that company’s need. On the other side the tendency for companies to have their own infrastructure diminishes if they are no longer capable of using scale effects in the world-wide competition, or if their market niches cannot be developed any more, and if the factor prices for advanced products and services have decreased. One example is the German stock exchange, which as a so-called “proximity partner” has chosen companies like Equiniy or Colt to realize the connection to the stock exchange network with low latency times (less than 5 milliseconds). More than 200 international investment banks are already using this.
The better and more broadband-mode companies can be connected in FrankfurtRheinMain the more the use in the metropolitan area will increase and boost the development of infrastructure over the last mile with fiber glass. The investments in infrastructures will boost growth of the GDP in Frankfurt.
In the era of digital connection Frankfurt has finally also developed into the most important data node in Europe. Through the internet node DE-CIX a data volume is transferred daily which in the year of 2010 was already 10 PByte. The throughput of internet traffic on the DE-CIX doubles per year as the following figure shows. The topology of the internet node is designed for a growth of 80 Tbps currently and the current throughput is 4 Tbps at its peak.
The heart of the European internet beats in Frankfurt am Main. Analyses of Telegeography ® prove, that higher transmission speed as well in the networks of local companies as in long traffic networks, and in particular in internet characterized structures, generate more innovations as comparably lower transmission speeds. This can be shown in the formula: the higher the speed the more innovations will be made. Investments in digital infrastructures contribute to higher competitiveness in the metropolitan region in international comparison, as well as to an increase in general well-being. The German internet node DE-CIX in Frankfurt am Main is the guarantee for increasing competitiveness on the world markets.
